It is also the standard for LZX analog modular systems <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lzxindustries.net\">http:\/\/www.lzxindustries.net<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Because composite is the\u00a0most common format, the approach here will be to convert everything else to composite. With a few exceptions.<\/p>\n<h5>S-video<\/h5>\n<p>S-video uses several channels to convey AV data. The easiest way to convert S-video to composite, or vice-versa is to use a VCR or capture device that has s-video IO.<\/p>\n<h5>VHF analog TV<\/h5>\n<p>Older video devices use coaxial cables with F connectors to transmit modulated AV signals on channels 3 and 4.<\/p>\n<h5>RF modulators and demodulators<\/h5>\n<h6>RF modulators<\/h6>\n<p>To convert from composite to TV use an RF modulator:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/7162.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-18983\" src=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/7162-300x155.jpg\" alt=\"7162\" width=\"300\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/7162-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/7162.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can also use a VCR as an RF modulator.<\/p>\n<p>RF modulators can be used as TV transmitters. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/?p=12355\">https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/?p=12355<\/a><\/p>\n<h6>RF demodulators<\/h6>\n<p>To convert from TV to composite, use an RF demodulator. The demodulator removes the VHF carrier, leaving a baseband composite signal.<\/p>\n<p>Demodulators can be expensive and difficult to find, so if you are not too concerned about image quality its easier to use a VCR. Connect the input signal to the TV coax input. Set the VCR to channel 3 or 4. The signal passes through to the composite output (yellow RCA jack). This method also works as an inexpensive method of TBC (time base correction).<\/p>\n<h5>VGA<\/h5>\n<p>Use a PC to TV converter to convert VGA signals to composite:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/?p=18716\">https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/?p=18716<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-27-at-5.02.22-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-18724\" src=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-27-at-5.02.22-PM-300x197.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-03-27 at 5.02.22 PM\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-27-at-5.02.22-PM-300x197.png 300w, https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-27-at-5.02.22-PM.png 998w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h5>Video capture<\/h5>\n<p>There are many options for video capture depending on which operating system and applications you are using.<\/p>\n<p>Here are several methods that work with MAC OS<\/p>\n<h6>Capture devices<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>Elgato Video Capture &#8211; USB (only works through Elgato app)<\/li>\n<li>Diamond Video Capture &#8211; USB (shows up as a video camera?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>Media converters<\/h6>\n<p>Grass Valley ADVC 110 Digital Video Converter &#8211; Firewire 400\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.grassvalley.com\/products\/advc110\">http:\/\/www.grassvalley.com\/products\/advc110<\/a><\/p>\n<h6>Analog to digital pass-through<\/h6>\n<p>Some camcorders work as digital media converters. It may be difficult to determine which ones do this. \u00a0 Here&#8217;s a list of Sony camcorders that have this capability:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/forum.videohelp.com\/threads\/355121-Sony-Handycam-Digital8-camcorders-with-analog-digital-passthru\">http:\/\/forum.videohelp.com\/threads\/355121-Sony-Handycam-Digital8-camcorders-with-analog-digital-passthru<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another list:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fccug.org\/2222-10b%20How%20to%20convert%20an%20analog%20signal%20to%20digital.pdf\">http:\/\/fccug.org\/2222-10b%20How%20to%20convert%20an%20analog%20signal%20to%20digital.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some home-theatre system receivers will convert a variety of formats. I have not used this method.<\/p>\n<h6>iOS, Android<\/h6>\n<p>To capture video from a mobile device, use a streaming program like Airplay or Airserver <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airserver.com\/Mac\">http:\/\/www.airserver.com\/Mac<\/a>, or an adapter cable like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/store.apple.com\/us\/product\/MD098AM\/A\/apple-digital-av-adapter\">http:\/\/store.apple.com\/us\/product\/MD098AM\/A\/apple-digital-av-adapter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With MAC OS Yosemite Airplay capability might be built in?<\/p>\n<h6>Web cams<\/h6>\n<p>Macam supports a variety of web cams.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/?p=19000\">https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/?p=19000<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Examples<\/h4>\n<p>Here are some of my favorite ways to generate and process video.<\/p>\n<h5>Videonics Video Equalizer<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/32166_1_584d4a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-18988\" src=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/32166_1_584d4a-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"32166_1_584d4a\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/32166_1_584d4a-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/32166_1_584d4a.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Composite and S-video IO.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Videonics Video Equalizer\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bdmWLlMfA5s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>Camcorders with composite output<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DCR-HC62_cw_1_540x435.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-18995\" src=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DCR-HC62_cw_1_540x435-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"DCR-HC62_cw_1_540x435\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DCR-HC62_cw_1_540x435-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DCR-HC62_cw_1_540x435.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many camcorders have composite output. Often they will use a proprietary AV adapter cable. Classic Sony camcorders use an adapter cable with 3.5 mm plug connecting to 2 or 3 RCA plugs for composite video and audio.<\/p>\n<p>Camcorders are the most versatile and interesting devices for synthesis. They are instant feedback machines. Just point the camera at the screen. Zoom for instant hallucinations. Some camcorders have filters that can be applied in real time.<\/p>\n<h5>VCR&#8217;s<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/VCR-1200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-18996\" src=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/VCR-1200-300x123.jpg\" alt=\"VCR-1200\" width=\"300\" height=\"123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/VCR-1200-300x123.jpg 300w, https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/VCR-1200.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Older VHS VCR&#8217;s and tapes are inexpensive. Sometimes free. They provide an infinite variety of input signals. As well as a variety of signal conversion functions. Look for one that has a remote control.<\/p>\n<h5>Ancient analog TV&#8217;s<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/depositphotos_15260747-Portable-TV.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-18997\" src=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/depositphotos_15260747-Portable-TV-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Portable TV\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/depositphotos_15260747-Portable-TV-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/depositphotos_15260747-Portable-TV.jpg 682w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Use an RF modulator (see above) to watch composite video on a very old TV. You may also need an impedance transformer if the TV has screw terminals instead of a coax jack.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a Max patch running on a portable TV:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/?p=18716\">https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/?p=18716<\/a><\/p>\n<h5>Atari Video Music c-240<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/atari-video-music-player-c240-c-240.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-18989\" src=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/atari-video-music-player-c240-c-240-300x139.jpg\" alt=\"atari-video-music-player-c240-c-240\" width=\"300\" height=\"139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/atari-video-music-player-c240-c-240-300x139.jpg 300w, https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/atari-video-music-player-c240-c-240.jpg 593w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Atari Video Music generates geometric patterns from audio input. <a href=\"https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/?p=19004\">https:\/\/reactivemusic.net\/?p=19004<\/a>.\u00a0It features a TV output, although oddly uses an RCA plug.
